STADT:up

Solutions and Technologies for Automated Driving in Town: an urban mobility project

Prof. Dr. Fabian Flohr

In the project STADT:up IVL focuses on integrated, scalable solutions for future urban mobility: The vehicles must also be able to safely handle complex inner-city traffic scenarios. The solutions are based on individual mobility cases and show the networking for multi-modal mobility. With a view to realistic perspectives of future urban mobility, suitable future concepts are being developed and requirements derived on the basis of user needs.

In the project we consider the whole functional chain: perception, fusion, localization, environment model, prediction, interaction and cooperation up to behavior and maneuver planning. The goals are the recognition of dynamic and static environments and the delineation and treatment of fuzziness in these two categories, as well as highly available robust and adaptive trajectory planning based on multimodal prediction of all road users.

In this context, HM’s Intelligent Vehicles Lab focuses on accurate detection and prediction of vulnerable road users (e.g., pedestrians and bicyclists) and derived behavior planning.

The project also takes a differentiated look at the interaction and communication concepts between users, vehicles and other road users in automated driving. In this context, the situation-dependent adaptivity of operating concepts as well as the situation- and experience-dependent change of user behavior will be examined.

In addition, concepts and perspectives for future intermodal mobility will be developed, involving all stakeholders: Cities, users, research institutions and the automotive industry. Of central importance is the question of how the mixed traffic of pedestrians, cyclists, privately or jointly used vehicles and public transport will develop in the future. Possible influences such as a strengthening of regionality and the development of local city centers, the change of infrastructure or the changing mobility behavior of users, e.g. through home offices or a growing energy and resource awareness, will be considered.

The project is being conducted at the Intelligent Vehicles Lab (Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Institute for Applications of Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems – IAMLIS) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Fabian Flohr.
