EnBeeMo - An Algorithm to Track Bees

05. November 2020.

With the Bavarian national referendum to save the bees in 2019, the importance of these animals for a healthy environment has become clear to the public. Mellifera e.V. is an organization that is committed to an agriculture that does justice to bees, man and nature in the long term. This interest led to a challenge with the Laboratory for Systems Engineering and the DTLab of Hochschule Munich University of Applied Sciences. The students were to search for a way to measure the number of bees in a colony without affecting their natural habitat or flight behaviour. As a proposed solution, they designed a system called "EnBeeMo" (Environment and Bee Monitoring, pictured), which uses an infrared camera to record the incoming and outgoing bees in a hive. The images produced were analysed using a machine learning algorithm based on AWS Technology. The system is developed further by the students.
