Safe electric micromobility

Lithium-ion batteries in small electric vehicles such as e-bikes, e-scooters and personal transporters are sometimes exposed to massive mechanical loads, e.g. when falling, hitting the curb or even just tipping over.

These mechanical loads can lead to damage to the batteries, which are not always immediately apparent and, if they remain undetected, may not lead to an error until later use. However, critical situation may occur later, especially during charging, and in the worst case lead to overheating or fire of the battery.

The Safe-µ-Mob project aims to minimize these risks and make electrical micromobility even safer. To do this, the specific load situation, in particular mechanical shocks, must first be determined and their effects on the battery pack analyzed. The project builds on experiences from the ReVISEDBatt research project. On the basis of this information, measurement methods are developed that detect critical states in battery cells or the module and can be implemented cost-effectively on a battery management system.

In addition, a special focus should be placed on the monitoring of the charging process and by monitoring the impedance, i.e. the internal resistance of the battery. This allows to detect possible damage to battery cells, cell connectors and electrical contacts.
