Flair2 project: Autonomous control of generation and load in the local grid

How can electricity generation and consumption in a local grid be better coordinated? This is demonstrated in the Flair2 research project using a self-sufficient control system - the Flair2 module

With the further expansion of photovoltaics and the simultaneous expansion of electromobility and heat pump technology, the potential and also the necessity for load management, i.e. the optimised distribution and overlapping of load and generation, is growing in local grids. The goal is to achieve grid-serving operation and better utilisation of the existing electricity grid. In the Flair2 (intelligent control of flexible plants) research project, LEW Verteilnetz, Stromnetz Berlin, Munich University of Applied Sciences (Institute for Sustainable Energy Systems ISES) and e*Message are investigating how this potential can already be tapped with a self-sufficient control system - the Flair2 module.

The special feature here is that the modules work solely on the basis of the mains voltage. They do not rely on any communication with a grid control centre or other infrastructure. A field trial has been running since December 2021 in around 100 households in urban and rural areas. The evaluations of the first field phase are now available.
