Opening of the DTLab

26. July 2019.

The Digital Transformation Lab (DTLab) at the University of Applied Sciences Munich was officially opened with a festive ceremony on Thursday, July 18. Prof. Dr. Martin Leitner, President of the University of Applied Sciences, welcomed 130 guests from science, the public sector and business and emphasized the importance of the DTLab. This is one of seven Cloud Innovation Centres worldwide in which Amazon Web Services (AWS) cooperates with universities to promote digitalization in the public sector.

Till Dalkowski, Head of Public Sector Germany and Peter Streifler, Service Owner Cloud & Digital Services, Siemens, illustrated the importance of cloud computing for projects in the public and private sectors. Dr. Florian Allwein (HM) and Lars Schmitz (AWS) presented the DTLab. Starting in autumn 2019, the DTLab will organize teaching projects in which students of the university will work on problems in the field of digitalization in the public sector, drawing on technical resources from AWS and proven innovation processes from AWS and the SCE.

First results of the pilot projects from previous semesters were presented by Prof. Dr. Gudrun Socher and Prof. Dr. Rainer Schmidt from the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics.

Finally, under the direction of Dr. Sven Winterhalder (HM), a panel of high-ranking participants discussed the question of why Germany is lagging behind other countries in many areas of digitalization and how Munich University of Applied Sciences can help to change this. Participants in the discussion were:

  • Thomas Bönig, Professional City Councilor & CIO, LHM
  • Till Dalkowski, Head of Public Sector DACH, AWS
  • Michael Hack, Head of Business Development, SCE
  • Prof. Dr. Thomas Stumpp, Vice President Economics, HM
  • Prof. Dr. Veronika Thurner, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics

On the following reception, the results of the pilot project on "Civic Participation through Social Information Systems" could be marvelled at on posters of the participating students. The results will be published here soon.

Prof. Dr. Martin Leitner, President of the Munich University of Applied Sciences, speaks in the video, which was produced during the "Public Sector Summits" congress, about the importance of the DTLab for the university and the public sector. Interested parties can view it under this link.
