Alexa Helps People with Dementia

27. February 2020.

Students of the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics worked on a DTLab challenge with the Alzheimer Society Munich in the winter semester 2019/20. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Gudrun Socher, 14 teams created functional prototypes of speech-based apps for people in early stages of dementia as part of the lecture "Software Engineering I". DTLab partner Amazon Web Services (AWS) provided technical support and a practical introduction to the "Working Backwards" innovation process. The challenge ran parallel to the challenge "".

The starting point was the question "What technical solutions can help people with dementia and/or relatives and professionals?". The students then developed applications that could help to execute processes defined by relatives the right way (e.g. leaving the house or completing certain chores), appointment reminders, language diaries, apps for brain jogging and more.
