Climate Protection Despite the Crisis

12. March 2021.

The city of Munich wants to be climate-neutral by 2035. This requires a decarbonization push through digital technologies. However, especially in times of crisis such as the Corona pandemic, many companies have to contend with budget restrictions and economic problems. The challenge posed to our student teams by the Department of Labor and Economic Development was therefore: How can the city government motivate local businesses to protect the climate in times of crisis through digital solutions?

With the support of the Strascheg Centre for Entrepreneurship and Amazon Web Services as partner of the DTLab, the students developed four different prototypes:

  • A CO2 calculator that allows comparisons and provides tips for reduction.
  • A website with information on green walls in offices
  • A CO2 calculator that assigns companies an "Ecolabel" depending on their progress
  • A ranking system that allows consumers to find companies that have successfully reduced their CO2 emissions.
The Challenge was conducted as a virtual challenge with HM's international partner universities as part of the GlobalXChanges/Challenges project, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The full report on the challenge can be found here.
