Digital help for social workers - Off Road Kids

The Off Road Kids Stiftung was established for the integration of street children and of disengaged minors and young adults with little or no family support in society. In addition to helping street kids and young people at risk of homelessness in acute emergencies, the foundation also aims to help improve the situation of children, adolescents and young adults in the long term. The organization is stretched to capacity, with up to 6,000 requests a year from people under the age of 27 seeking help. The resource and capacity bottleneck in processing requests is due in part to the fact that existing communication channels between social workers and homeless youth are not optimized and automated, resulting in inefficient and slow processing and making it difficult for unserved youth to access help quickly and efficiently.

As part of SCE's Real Projects, 3 teams worked on solutions to the challenges:

Solution Team "StreetSmart Add On Prototype"

StreetSmart GitHub Repository is an add-on application designed to help social workers streamline their workflow and minimize the time spent on each application. We are an early-stage startup consisting of 7 students from Munich University of Applied Sciences and got our prototype up and running as part of the Real Projects Digitalization course. Through predefined answers, sentiment analysis, legal information, video embedding and keyword filtering, our solution saves social workers time so they can focus on saving lives.

Solution Team "Sofahoppers Chatbot"

To ensure that every teenager has the chance to get the help they need, we came up with the idea of an AI-based chatbot that would be able to help teens 24/7, for example, helping them find the nearest place to sleep and make an appointment with a social worker. We made our bot as human-like as possible to make teens feel valued and safe. But we also made sure they always know they're talking to a bot so they don't feel lied to. Together with our simple and minimalistic design, the chatbot will not only help them in the best possible way, but also make them feel comfortable and welcoming.

Solution Team "Social Connect"

We help social workers save time and focus on people in need with our solution. Our project aims to reduce the workload of social workers and ease the search process by providing them with a solution that streamlines and simplifies this task. We offer a centralized program that lists all available social services on one convenient platform.
