Research-based development of a low-voltage MMC
The DEFINE joint project focuses on research and practical testing of a DC-based medium-voltage grid in the megawatt range. Since the development of power converters in this voltage and power range is associated with considerable financial, spatial and temporal expenditure, the operating and control strategies of the medium-voltage grid can only be tested and validated with difficulty in advance.tial product of the distribution system operator, which is to guarantee smooth operation. The voltage quality is influenced by network and consumer behaviour. An essential grid property in this context is the frequency-dependent grid impedance. A critical load characteristic is a non-sinusoidal current consumption, e.g. caused by the operation of frequency converters, or feedback effects from active control loops.
For this reason, a scaled M2C low-voltage inverter is to be developed within the scope of this project by the Munich University of Applied Sciences (laboratory LE FK04). Since this inverter can be constructed much more easily in the low-voltage range, the system to be developed here will be used in advance as a test system in the DEFINE project. Among other things, care will be taken to ensure that all interfaces are largely identical to the final system, so that this system can also be used for software tests.
From a hardware point of view, a highly dynamic, multi-stage, PCB-based power converter is to be created, which is based on the latest state of the art. New control, measurement, cooling and assembly technologies are to be investigated and tested, with the aim of achieving a performance class that can otherwise only be achieved with expensive power modules.
