Environmental communication supporting municipal energy transition

Prof. Dr. Herbert Palm, Prof. Dr. Nicole Brandstetter (FK13)

The share of renewable primary energy sources in Germany was around 20% in 2020. The majority of the energy transition towards a decentralised, decoupled and, above all, sustainable form of energy supply still has to be achieved. In the context of this development, municipalities have an essential and, for most municipalities, new function as energy suppliers.

In the project "Kommunale Energiewende unterstützende Umweltkommunikation" (KEuko), we plan to find out what communication should look like that enables participation in the energy transition in a citizen-oriented and individual way. Therefore we have joined forces with the local government of Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn, a municipality with 10,000 inhabitants in the district of Munich, for this pilot project - funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU). Together with the municipality, we will create role models, process elements and tools for environmental communication.

Other municipalities should then also benefit from our findings.
