Evaluation of Optimal Experimental Design applied to a real-world Li-ion Battery Aging Study Motivation

This study, led by Prof. Dr. Oliver Bohlen and Prof. Dr. Herbert Palm, develops and applies new methods of optimal experimental design to efficiently characterize the aging behavior of lithium-ion batteries. The goal is to obtain precise model parameters with minimal experimental effort. A novel approach called parameter-individual optimal experimental design (pi-OED) was developed to specifically improve the accuracy of key parameters. pi-OED is integrated into a multi-stage optimal experimental design framework (MS-OED) that enables efficient experiments even with limited prior knowledge. Simulations and practical tests on commercial cells demonstrate that MS-OED reduces effort while enhancing model quality. These methods significantly advance statistical experimental design in battery research and support the development of long-lasting energy storage systems.
