Losses of Nanocrystalline Core Materials for High Power, High Frequency Applications

Due to their beneficial characteristics, nanocrystalline materials as a magnetic component are gaining increasing attention in the design of high-performance, high-frequency power electronics applications. In early 2021, Vacuumschmelze launched the VITROPERM 550HF material, which promises further weight/space reductions and significantly lower core losses compared to the existing material VITROPERM 500F. To evaluate the properties of the new material for power electronics applications, we examined two toroidal cores with nearly identical geometric properties. B-H loop measurements using non-sinusoidal excitation show a significant reduction in core loss of about 30% for the 550HF core over a wide range of flux densities and temperatures.
