VDE Bayern Award 2021, Category Science
PhD student from the team of Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Christoph Hackl receives VDE Bayern Award in the science category
Dr.-Ing. Korbinian Schechner received for his dissertation "Modeling and Control of Large-Scale Direct-Drive Wind Turbine Systems under Open-Switch Faults in the Machine-Side Converter", the VDE Bayern Award 2021 from one of the the biggest Technology Organisation in Europe, VDE Bayern.
Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) and electric excited synchronous machines (EESM) are used in wind power plants to generate electricity. Dr. Korbinian Schechner is developing in his dissertation new control strategies for both machine types in the event of a fault in the machine-side converter. Thanks to its regulation, in the event of a fault, it is still possible to feed in over 93% of the amount of energy in normal operation - there is no need for a safety shutdown. For these control strategies, he first creates new, detailed models taking into account “open switch” errors. His interim results are also of great importance for fault-tolerant and efficiency-increasing drive regulation and control procedures in general and thus make a significant contribution to the further development of electrical drive technology.
Dr. Korbinian Schechner works now as a development engineer at the partner company MAN Truck & Bus SE.
We congratulate him and wish him success!
