Students Promote Correct Waste Separation

18. March 2021.

Although Munich already pays close attention to correct waste separation, many citizens are still unaware that the use of bags made of biodegradable plastics in the organic waste is a problem. Their rotting time exceeds the period of 12 weeks that biowaste spends in the facilities of the Munich Waste Management Company (AMW) to make Munich soil from it. Together with students from the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, the AWM was looking for a solution to this problem. The students went through two innovation workshops led by Amazon Web Services and concluded that the best approach to combat the problem was better education about the issue, especially through social media platforms. Their solution strategy included disseminating relevant information through influencers, short videos and banner ads on websites.
